Continuously diving into new worlds and unusual experiences, Tom Dixon likes to design from a naive, inexperienced perspective. His eponymous brand – a British design and manufacturing company of lighting and furniture, established in 2002 – shows that Dixon is a designer who completely controls the chain, from raw material to the client.

'Cast' chair by Tom Dixon

During this year’s Milan Design Week the British label Tom Dixon will exhibit its most recent novelties in the beautiful 400sqm-location of Officine Stendhal (Via Stendhal 35). Amongst them ‘Cast’ – a multi-purpose chair composed of cast iron legs that are bolted to the seat and backrest which are made from slabs of thick foam. The chair can easily be disassembled and shipped in a small package because all components fit perfectly into the seat itself.

'Jack Black' by Tom Dixon for Tom Dixon

There are many reasons for reissuing a design, but getting your hands on the original tool to make it is as good as any. Armed once more with the tooling that he himself fashioned back in the day in his own workshop, Tom Dixon has launched a black companion piece to his iconic, stackable ‘Jack Light’ (the latter manufactured by Eurolounge), whose colour serves to emphasise the product’s strongly graphic form. Made from plastic and rotary-moulded, ‘Jack Black’ can be used as seating or as an accessory, and comes without a light.

Tom Dixon's 'Jack Black' works particularly well as a companion piece to the existing 'Jack Light'

During this year’s London Design Festival the Britsh designer and manufacturer Tom Dixon will launch this new wooden stool.

The ‘Offcut ‘stool’s elementary form is the result of several innovations; the circular round seat makes clever use of the curved offcuts, its construction requires no additional screws or glue, and the stool is flat packed for ease of delivery. It is available in natural and fluoro.

The new Tom Dixon collcetion will be exhibited during the London Design Festival 21-27 Septmber 2009 in the Wharf Building, Portobello Dock, 344 Ladbroke Grove, W10 5BU.

'Screw Table' by Tom Dixon

'Screw Table' by Tom Dixon

Some of the novelties Tom Dixon showed during the Design Week in Milan at the famous Superstudio Più refer to the roots of the British designer, who made his name in the 1980s with rough, self-made, welded furniture.

The ‘Screw Table’, for example, sartorially combines an industrial look with high-class materials.

Made from a cast iron tripod base with a white marble top, the industrial strength of the aluminium screw enables multiple heights by simply spinning the top.
