‘Bitmap’ collection by Zuzunaga

Cristian Zuzunaga’s textile designs works on many levels. The London- and Barcelona-based designer’s latest collection is no exception.

‘Bitmap’ plays with the idea of a simultaneous micro and macro view of the world, referencing as it does the visual DNA of digital imagery examined close up and, at the same time, the urban landscape presented in cartographic form – a bit of a map. The clue is in the name of the woven products, such as ‘New York’, ‘Shanghai’, ‘Tokyo’ and, of course, ‘Barcelona’.

In the (unfortunate) hierarchy of design disciplines – just ask any architect and they’ll confirm this – textile design has traditionally occupied a less-than-superior position. Spanish-born Londoner Cristian Zuzunaga has been troubling the creative order of things recently, however, with his conceptually and technically innovative work for such leading textile manfuacturers as Kvadrat and Nanimarquina. The interesting thing, though, is that he’s not a textile designer, at least in terms of training. Architonic met up with Zuzunaga at the Design Post in Cologne during this year’s Orgatec fair to pick at some threads. (more…)

'Fire' pattern for Kvadrat pillowcases by Cristian Zuzunaga

His impressing colourful visual landscapes were discovered by one of the best textile companies. Kvadrat will launch a new collection of textiles designed by the Barcelona born and London based pattern designer Cristian Zuzunaga.

His cushion collection, ‘Squaring of the Circle’, consists of three designs, named ‘Spirit’, ‘Soul’ and ‘Fire’, which are all constructed from pixels – the designer’s trademark pattern. Each cushion will be unique thanks to the repeat of the printed fabric. This as well as Cristian Zuzunaga’s curtain collection ‘Skyline and Cityscape’ will be presented during this year’s London Design Festival at the Kvadrat showroom, 10 Shepherdess Walk, London N1 7LB.
