The interdisciplinary Zagreb based studio Produkcija 004 realised this Emergency Terminal for their hometown, which is in use sinceApril this year. Due to a translucent textile facade the steel construction is visible and the monolithic, multi functional building gets a certain lightness and elegance.

Here is what the architects say:

“Through a synthesis of architectural genres (hospital, clinic, garage, administrative, and educational buildings) the Emergency terminal emerges as a new urban sign of safety, competence and speed. The 8-story facility includes a reception and telecommunications service, resuscitation clinic, in-patient clinic, Zagreb City’s medical supply storage, a lecture hall and classrooms, a laboratory, administration service, technical service and multi-story garage accommodating 170 medical vehicles. Measuring up to the high criteria of contemporary architecture, the institution, approximately 14,000 m2 in surface area, can serve 2 million citizens. The steel skeletal construction with supported ceiling plates meets the architectural demands of lightness and spatial variability. An effective and rational solution for the large surface of the façade is the membrane net structure. Within the heterogeneous surrounding the translucent character of the material (textile membrane – precontraint ) contributes to the varying perception of the building during the day versus during the night. In the daylight the house dominates with its volume and attracts with the cleanness (sterility) of white. When lit up at night the membrane façade turns the entire house into a large, white lantern –the white cube becomes an illuminated landmark.”

The Design group For Use was formed trough the collaboration of Sven Jonke, Christopher Katzler, and Nikola Radeljkovic, based in Zagreb and Vienna. For Use stands mainly for product design. They work for companies like Moroso, Element or Zanotta. But under the name Numen they are also realizing interior concepts and set designs. Here is an example of a set design which was executed as an installation at the gallery of Croation Designer’s Society in Zagreb in May this year.

Cardboard tubes acquired from waste of carpet dealers were fixed at the floor and the ceiling. The tape was first randomly wrapped around the columns, forming the cords of the future spatial structure. From the subsequent multiple wrapping of tape over tape the complex organic surface of the installation emerged. Even though various geometrical systems of addition of the tape were tested during the building of the installation, the resulting shapes were always mutually similar, as if the forms with chaotic, organic growth have the same, ungraspable inner order as natural beings.
