'Birdstick' storage unit by Kristina Kjær Hansen; photo by Emil Monty Freddie
With the spring just around the corner, nest boxes are likely to reappear fixed to walls, trees or buildings in many backyards and gardens. Now, thanks to a young Danish designer Kristina Kjær Hansen, you can also set up a birdhouse and admire it from the comfort of your own apartment. Yes, it might not attract as many birds as its outdoor equivalent but with its differently sized storage modules, ‘Birdstick’ provides enough space to store large as well as medium and small items within its ‘nesting modules’. Assembled without the use of glue or bolts, the solid oak design can be adjusted depending on individual needs of its user. The design was showcased earlier this month at the TEKO stand in the Greenhouse area at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2012.

'New Order' by Stefan Diez
‘New Order’ – Either Stefan Diez is a big admirer of British New Wave (which would be one more reason to be fond of his taste), or he simply found a fitting name for the new modular and stackable shelving system he designed for the Britsh manufacturer Established & Sons. The basic frame made from owder-coated aluminium can be accessorised with optional elements, including shelving, door compartments, space dividers, trays and castors.

'Trapeze' by Nicola from Bern
This modular storage system consists of an optional number of identical metal boxes. It was created by the Swiss designer Nicola from Bern. The storage space for shoes can be reduced with a wedge-shaped array. The accordingly designed boxes can be arranged as a stack or a quadrant. It never gets undersized – just add another unit for your new pair of shoes.

'Crate' by Martin Born
The Eindhoven-based designer Martin Born designed this modular shelf system which can be composed in full freedom of alignment and orientation.

'Crate' sytem by Martin Born
This three-dimensional predicate uncloses applications inaccessible to the typological wall-form: Choreographed “movements” and sophisticated access paths are as easily realised as more “ordinary” setups – without loss of use value. Together with a nuanced palette of colours, the system gives architects an immense freedom in elaborating and coordinating the storage piece as an active design element.

'Scalo' by Cerruti Baleri
In Milan the Italian manufacturer Cerruti Baleri presented a new multifunctional furniture designed by Beoc. ‘Scalo’ is a sidetable or stool which is convertible into a step ladder or a small bookshelf through the movement of hidden hinges. It is made of bent plywood in natural ash colour with laminated lead-grey interior or in moka ash colour with laminated red interior.
