'Candy Table' by Sylvain Willenz for Cappellini; photo by Nicola Zocchi

In Milan’s Zona Tortona, on Via Solari 35, the Italian design powerhouse Cappellini has presented an array of brand’s 2012 novelties, among them this pared-down table created by a Brussels-based designer Sylvain Willenz. Named ‘Candy Table’, the piece is part of Willenz’s Candy Collection, which explores and reinvents the steel reinforcement bars normally used as construction material for concrete structures. The steel tables are available in two various shapes and sizes (with a square or round tabletop) and in five different matt colours such as; blue, black, green, white and red. (more…)

The detail of the 'Magneto' lamp by Giulio Iacchetti for Foscarini

Following his popular ‘Tropico’ pendant lamp on which he collaborated with the Italian lighting specialists Foscarini in 2008, the Milan-based industrial designer Giulio Iacchetti has recently created this new table and floor lights called ‘Magneto’. Made of painted steel and available at the end of March 2012 in either red or grey colour version, the minimalist, pared-down lamp emits an intensive and precise beam of LED light, which can be adjusted and repositioned thanks to ‘the mysterious force of a magnet that joins the support rod with a circular base’ of the design. 'Spotlight Volumes' pendant lamp by Lukas Peet

The young Canadian designer and Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Lukas Peet has created this series of steel pendant lamps inspired by spotlights. Presented earlier last month during imm cologne’s [D³] Contest, the ‘Spotlight Volumes’ collection encompasses three glossy lampshades, each fitted with an energy efficient lightbulb at either end which simultaneously illuminate the ceiling and the floor of an interior. The design is suspended with a simple, braided electrical cord and a 1mm steel wire looped around the lamp. (more…)

'Steel Mirror' by Angell Wyller Aarseth

Continuing with the Scandinavian theme, this striking clean-cut ‘Steel Mirror’ has been designed by the Norwegian trio of young designers and university friends: Simen Aarseth, Christoffer Angell and Øyvind Wyller. Quintessentially Nordic, the stainless steel, oak and leather piece is part of the new series of works by Angell Wyller Aarseth and it will be on show at this year’s ICFF in New York from 14 – 17 May 2011.

The Yii series is a project of the National Taiwan Craft Research Institute, organised under the art direction of Gijs Bakker, co-founder of Droog Design. The Japanese studio Nendo, also invlved into the project tried to discover sources for new designs through the research into Taiwan’s traditional bamboo handicrafts and furniture. The result is this series of chairs for which the designers applied bamboo-working techniques to tubular steel pipes.


All pieces of the Yii project will be exhibited at La Triennale di Milano, Viale Emilio Alemagna, 6 during this year’s Salone del Mobile from 12 – 17 April.

'Lloyd' dining table by Christoph Seyferth for Functionals

At the INTERIEUR 2010 in Kortrijk we discovered this smart and elegant table by Christoph Seyferth.

The Dutch designer created it for the guest room of recently opened Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. Produced by the Dutch manufacturer Functionals the table is completely made of steel and comes in various sizes. Its flexible top allows all four legs to touch the floor even when the surface is wildly uneven.

The Berlin based design practice Atelier Haußmann recently unveiled their new minimalist wardrobe made of powder coated steel. ‘YOUTOO’ is nominated for this year’s interior innovation award at the imm cologne 2010.

“All products of the new collection are designed for the idea to create new products with a basic production process and traditional function, which won`t be subject to fashion or trends. This concept achieved the Wardrobe ‘YOUTOO’.

‘YOUTOO’ cited and is appointed well known designs and materials and reinterpret those new.”

'Stars Cubo' side table by Laurameroni

'Stars Cubo' side table by Laurameroni

The North Italian manufacturer Laurameroni presented this family of minimalist metallic furniture this year. Inspired by the 1960s Op Art the well established Italian studio Bartoli Design created these cubic, almost radical pieces with surfaces divided into increasing and decreasing sequences of rectangles. There are four different finishes: Polished steel, natural brass, burnished copper and natural copper.
