Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

‘Regrets, I’ve had a few,’ sang Sinatra in his classic ballad ‘My Way’, while Piaf famously insisted that she regretted absolutely nothing. Somewhere between these two lies Ronan Bouroullec, one half of the distinguished French go-to design duo, the Bouroullec Brothers. ‘We’ve done a lot of disasters. But we’ve had the chance to do best-sellers, too. It’s a mix, really,’ he tells Architonic at the recent Cologne Furniture Fair.

'Losanges' by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Nanimarquina

At this year’s Maison&Objet from 21 – 25 January the Spanish carpet manufacturer Nanimarquina will present the new design by the Paris based designer brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Based on the traditional kilim-technique, carried through by the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan, they created this vivid, geometrical, rhombus shaped pattern. Completely manufactured by hand – even the Afghan wool is spun by hand – each lozenge is slightly different and each rug, a unique piece.

'Ovale' by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

The Paris based Bouroullec brothers recently completed this new tableware collection, designed for the Italian manufacturer Alessi. The relatively thick-walled yet elagant cups and pans are a perfect combination of classiness and tradition – “Delicate, slightly expressive, simple, almost neo-primitive” how Alberto Alessi describes it.

Unité d'Habitation by Le Corbusier

Unité d’Habitation – people also call it ‘Living Machine’ – is the name of a residential housing design principle Le Corbusier developed in the 1940s. Five of them have been realised, four in France and one in Berlin. The first one was the Cité radieuse in Marseille. Recently the Paris based design duo Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec got the chance to refurnish and design the interior of one apartment. The open doors of the Apartment 50 featuring the exhibition will be held from July 15 to August 15 2010.

Here is what the designers explain:

“It all started early this year when Jasper Morrison introduced us to the owners of one of the apartments in the housing block unit of the Marseille-based Radiant City. The Apartment 50 is not a museum; it is a lived-in space that we remodelled – just for the time of the summer season. We decided to feature a selection of objects from our collection of designs which seemed to rightly fit in this apartment and match the way the owners are living in it. As an echo to Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé’s original furniture of the space, it seemed natural to us to articulate the remodelling around the SteelWood collection, Magis – including a table, some chairs and a shelving system. Additionally, while remembering that Le Corbusier had a special interest in tapestries, we felt comfortable with the idea of installing a group of Clouds, Kvadrat up on the wall. Finally, a Zip carpet, Vitra and two of our latest lighting designs, including Lampalumina, Bitossi and LightHouse, Established & Sons and Venini, complete this ephemeral remodelling project.”

The new armchair and sofa designed for Established & Sons by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec was presented during this year´s Milan Design Week in the well arranged showroom of the British manufacturer.

After major projects with the Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat, the brothers once more demonstrate their ability to re-invent the processing of textiles, in particular for upholstered furniture. The upholstery of ‘Quilt’, for example, consists of only a single section, which thanks to its geometry and reinforced edges can easily be be fitted over the fibreglass shell on the steel frame.
