A total of 374 individual elements made of fibreC, covering over 2,000 square metres, go to make up the perforated skin of the Huttunen­Lipasti­Pakkanen Architects-designed Länsisatamankatu 23 apartment building in Helsinki’s former docklands

In architectural terms, given the time it takes to complete a large-scale project, ten years isn’t that long. All the more remarkable therefore that Austrian manufacturer Rieder’s innovative wonder material fibreC – fabricated from concrete and glass fibre – has been specified widely, introducing a new language in exteriors and interiors. Two Dutch architectural practices HVDN and Studioninedots have recently completed this vast, waterfront mixed-use development located between Amsterdam’s old town and the Central Station. Encompassing 28 luxurious apartments as well as number of commercial spaces such restaurants and a department store, HVDN/Studioninedots’ building is part of a 200,000-square-feet master plan for the Oosterdokseiland area which ‘consists of high density buildings interwoven with narrow passageways that link enclosed open spaces.’ (more…)

Following a concept of ‘living between the city and the nature’, this luxurious penthouse apartment located on 48th and 49th floors of a residential skyscraper in southern Chinese city of Shenzhen has been recently realised by two Italian-born, Shanghai-based architects Filippo Gabbiani and Andrea Destefanis of Kokaistudios architectural practice. Towering above the hustle and bustle of the fast growing Central Business District in Shenzhen and offering picturesque views of natural landscape of Hong Kong from its southern wing, the apartment is a result of ‘large-scale architectural modifications applied to the original layout’ of two, previously disconnected apartments. Completed in November 2011, the vast, 616-square-meters penthouse takes its name from the tree which bedecks the entrance area.

The 870,000 ft2 (80,000 m2) residential complex is situated on W57th Street

West 57th occupies a full city block at the corner of West 57th Street and the West Side Highway.

The project introduces a new building typology to Manhattan: a hybrid between the traditional Danish perimeter block and a Manhattan high-rise.
