The renowned Italian manufacturer Glas Italia has unveiled its new glossy headquarters located in Macherio near Milan. The 11,000-m2 steel-and-glass building has been designed by Glas Italia’s long-time collaborator, architect and designer Piero Lissoni who incorporated the original black-steel frame of what used to be an old factory and cladded it with vertical sheets of thermo-insulating U-glass. The collaboration between the Milan based design practice of Piero Lissoni and the Italian manfacturer Porro has been going on for many years. One of their newest products is ‘Sidewall’ a shelf for hanging on the wall or resting on the floor, in the middle of the room. In the on-floor version, this containing element is proposed on a rotating base.

Tilted 'Wireframes' by Piero Lissoni for Glas Italia

Tilted 'Wireframes' by Piero Lissoni for Glas Italia

The difficulty is simplicity – at least when it comes to glas furniture. The Italian company Glas Italia is one of the most capable manufacturers in this field. Since almost 40 years Glas Italia avails itself of the collaboration of renowned designers who have full freedom to experimenting on the technologically advanced productive plants made available by the company.

The colaboration between Glas Italia and Piero Lissoni has been going on for many years and the newest family designed by the Milan-based architect demonstrates once again the extraordinary skills of the manufacturer.

‘Wireframe’ is a series of twisted and irregular, parallelepiped shaped low tables, obtained by gluing tempered transparent extra-light glass slabs, whose edges have grinding angles with each of their inclinations completely different from the other ones. The result is an apparently unstable and precariously balanced low table. The edges are enhanced by a green or orange coloured line.

The glass manufacturer Glas Italia presented a range of pretty diverse products this year, among them the colourful table series by the Milano based American designer Johanna Grawunder. The overlapping variably tinted elements create a multi-faceted play of colours and underline the geometric basic design of the table.

Piero Lissonis contibution is a very clear and minimal series of rectangular high tables. The base, in transparent extra-light 19 mm. thick glass, shaped and ground with a shiny curved edge, is composed of two supporting elements, linked to a tie bar by means of satined steel plates. The extreme thinness and lightness of the base, achieved through a sophisticated and complex production process, corresponds to the solidity which the special tempering process provides.

Piero Lissoni created a whole new product family for Cassina at this year´s Design Week in Milan: The Eve chair, the Toot sofa system, the Naan and Rotor tables and the Radar cupboards.

Beside the minimal construction of ‘Toot’ which makes the sofa seem to float, especially the leather upholstery points out the meticulous work on details. Invisible stitching and creative folds offer an origami-like covering that creates a very thin side part and outlines forms perfectly.
