Following his ’28′ series of pendant lamps, the Vancouver- based architect and designer Omer Arbel has realised this series of striking lighting elements for the Canadian lighting specialists Bocci. Employing a similar technique to that originally developed by Arbel for the ’28′ collection, in this series ‘large glass spheres are blown, and then a multitude of white cavities are introduced into them haphazardly,intentionally intersecting and colliding with each other .’ ’38′ was showcased in a special large-scale lighting installation during this year’s Salone del Mobile at Spazio Rossana Orlandi. 'Melt down' pendant light by Johan Lindstén
Inspired by his recent trip to the Land of the Rising Sun, a young Swedish designer Johan Lindstén has created this series of spherical, semi-translucent pendant lights called ‘Melt down’. Suspended from a simple, coloured lamp cord, the design features an oval shade whose form appears to have adapted to a protruding light bulb located within. ‘Melt down’ was showcased earlier in April at Salone del Mobile’s Salone Satellite. A young Polish-born Vienna-based designer Patrycja Domanska has recently created this simple metal pendant lamp whose colour changes once the design heats up. Made of spun aluminium, ‘Holo’ is coated with a special thermochromic paint which fades from vivid turquoise to white when the lamp reaches 31 〫C (as seen in the video below). The design will be presented at Designersblock Milan 2012 which will take place as part of MOST during this year’s Salone del Mobile. (more…)

Wendy Legro and Maarten Collignon, a duo of young, Eindhoven-trained designers behind Rotterdam-based Studio WM, have realised these two, pared-down pendant lights: a shipyard-inspired, black opaque model called ‘Porcelain’ and a similar, hand-blown glass version, ‘Gradient.’ Based on the same principle, both of the designs employ a pulley mechanism which enables an easy adjustment of the height of the lamps. Part of the ‘Lightness in Lines’ collection, the lights will be presented at Ventura Lambrate during the Salone del Mobile 2012 in Milan. (more…)

'Coral' pendant light by Arturo Alvarez
Spanish designer Arturo Alvarez has created this series of delicate, organically-shaped suspension lights inspired by the beauty and structural complexity of aquatic life. Encompassing five different models, ‘Coral’ is made of texturised silicone mesh in white, black or orange and the collection was presented earlier this year at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2012. (more…)
