The site, located near the future Arena 92 in the Jardins de l’Arche neighborhood, serves as a space for genuine interchange between La Défense and Seine-Arche. The interior of La Gaîté Lyrique by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture; photo by Philippe Ruault

La Gaîté Lyrique – a lyrical gaiety – perfectly captures the quintessence of the breathtaking new project by the award-winning Parisian practice Manuelle Gautrand Architecture. Located in the heart of the French capital on Rue Papin, the €83m redevelopment of the 19th-century Théâtre de la Gaîté is a state-of-the-art polestar for creative endeavour which, in the words of Gautrand: ‘provides, on a daily basis, a meeting point between technology, art and the public’. Demonstration - Gridlock Collection by Philippe Malouin at the NextLevel Galerie, Paris

The second solo show of Philippe Malouin at the NextLevel Galerie in Paris is called ‘Demonstration’. The title of the exhibition embodies a unique personality and the fundamental values of the designer. It refers to both the French and the English meanings of the word. Demonstration is the result of the quest to achieve the quasi-scientific balance of an aluminum structure in which the connectors serve as tension points and whose configuration is invariably made up of 45° or 90° angles. Demonstration insists on design free of any superfluous effects, whose only aesthetic value is revealed through a light metallic structure with a great architectural potential.

Philippe Malouin continues in his approach to representing the object in the minimalist manner. Carefully assembled by hand, 5 000 aluminium tubes and 13 different stainless steel connectors provide a foundation for the functional elements.

“We have to think big”, said President Sarkozy on 30 April 2009 at the opening of the exhibition at the Palais de Chaillot, where ten of thirty-seven future models for the re-design of Paris are on display.

Paris is divided by an urban motorway which was built around the centre in 1973. This ‘boulevard périphérique’ diverts the traffic around and into the city and it regularly grinds to a halt, in spite of having up to eight lanes in each direction. Today it is one of Europe’s busiest roads.

Necessity is now going to be turned into sustainable development. Accordingly at the opening of the ‘Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine’ at the Palais de Chaillot in the autumn of 2007 the French president called for a “diagnosis of the urban landscape and visions for the coming twenty to forty years”, inviting forty-three working groups of architects and town planners to submit ideas for a competition. The results are to be seen in this exhibition.
