Now that BBQ season is in full swing and staying indoors no longer seems to cut the mustard, chances are many of us will endeavour to spruce up what is set to become the venue for these endless alfresco gatherings; be it a garden, roof terrace, patio or a balcony. (more…)

'FIDA' portable folding mat by Patrick Frey for VIAL

2011 is all about redressing the old work/leisure balance and getting serious about down-time. (Well, that’s what we’re telling ourselves at the moment.) In the spirit of this, here’s a new product from VIAL, the Aachen-based design label, that celebrates the static.

'Unbeweaveable' by Aprro

Admittedly its name is not what you call a very good wordplay but the wingback chair ‘Unbeweaveable’
designed by Alexander Purcell for the US brand Aprro Design is a beautiful in and outdoor furniture series anyway. Inspired by threshold living such as occurs in California and other similar climates its form is informed by the Victorian wingback and contemporized by a bent stainless frame. The French manufacturer for outdoor furniture Tectona presented its new collection including pieces by Inga Sempé, Nendo and Wieki Somers. 'Desirée' by Swedese

After a long an insistant winter – at least in Middle Europe – the last month of spring finally arrived. The Swedish manufacturer Swedese presented at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair a re-edition of an in- and outdoor family designed in 1954 by Yngve Ekström – the well-known Swedish designer who was also the founder of Swedese by the way. ‘Desirée’ is made from white lacquered steel wire – artfully and smartly bent it gives a certain lightness and strong stability to pieces at the the same time.

‘Only for Women’ was the motto of the design competition Alessandra Pasetti won with her outdoor chair ‘Knit Knot’. The Italian manufacturer Area Declic took it into production and presented it at this year’s Salone del Mobile for the first time. “The chair’s name refers to a typically feminine activity: knitting” – let’s take this with a wink and notice the beautiful artisanry of the seating and backrest handmade from a striking gradient coloured PVC- thread.
