Many hands make light work, goes the old saying. Many new LED producers also make the creative possibilities of working with such a fast-changing technology exciting, thanks to the proliferation of products they bring to the market. But, for lighting design manufacturers, an expansion of supplier choice brings with it a number of challenges. Architonic’s Simon Keane-Cowell sheds some light.

‘Leaf’ lamp by Broberg & Ridderstråle for Muuto

The Stockholm-based design duo Broberg & Ridderstråle have collaborated with the Danish furniture brand Muuto on this collection of neat and simple lamps called ‘Leaf’. Incorporating energy-efficient LED technology, the minimalist, organically-shaped light is available in two sizes and a range of soft pastel hues. (more…)

‘Polka’ table lamp by Florent Coirier

The Parisian-based designer Florent Coirier has recently unveiled his latest table lamp design called ‘Polka.’ Exhibited for the first time during this year’s edition of the Paris Design Week, the simple turned-oak light incorporates the LED technology while its concealed pivoting joint enables full 360 degree rotation of the lamp. The Hannover-based design practice Studio Dreimann have just completed their newest project: this large, yet delicate pendant lamp for an Italian lighting manufacturer I Tre. Incorporating the LED technology, ‘Aki’ has been designed with an office environment in mind and it is available in natural wood as well as enamelled finishes. (more…)

A Swiss multidisciplinary design studio Zmik have reinterpreted the form and, to some extent, function of an ordinary industrial working light by combining it with high-gloss polished chrome elements in this stellate-shaped chandelier. Incorporating the increasingly-popular LED technology, ‘Kroon’ exists in two different sizes and the light has just been shortlisted by Philippe Starck as one of the 10 finalists for the Frame Moooi Award 2012. The detail of the 'Magneto' lamp by Giulio Iacchetti for Foscarini

Following his popular ‘Tropico’ pendant lamp on which he collaborated with the Italian lighting specialists Foscarini in 2008, the Milan-based industrial designer Giulio Iacchetti has recently created this new table and floor lights called ‘Magneto’. Made of painted steel and available at the end of March 2012 in either red or grey colour version, the minimalist, pared-down lamp emits an intensive and precise beam of LED light, which can be adjusted and repositioned thanks to ’the mysterious force of a magnet that joins the support rod with a circular base’ of the design.
