'Grillage' by François Azambourg for Ligne Roset

This simple but formally elaborate lounge chair for the French manufacturer Ligne Roset was created by the Paris based designer François Azambourg. ‘Grillage’ consists of tabular steel base and a seating made from elegantly folded expanded sheet metal. The overlapping grid creates a beautiful spacial structure and moiré pattern.

Northern lights: Artek shows Alvar Aalto's 'A330S' pendant lights at DROOM's Cologne showroom as part of its 75th-anniversary installation during January's furniture fair

Few design brands evoke as much warmth on the part of consumers as the heritage-steeped Finnish company Artek, currently celebrating 75 years in business. Co-founded in 1935 by the hero of Scandinavian modernism Alvar Aalto, Artek has certainly earned its design stripes. At this year’s imm cologne ClassiCon presented the extended ‘Munich’ collection, a result of a collaboration between the internationallly active architectural practice Sauerbruch Hutton and the the German manufacturer. The armchair was originally designed for the newly built Brandhorst Museum in Munich. We met Louisa Hutton, co-founder of Sauerbruch Hutton, Philipp Eckhoff, product designer at Sauerbruch Hutton and Benoit Steenackers, product developer at ClassiCon for a short interview.

'Cold Cut' cutlery by Mathias Hahn

During this year’s imm cologne the German born and London based designer Mathias Hahn presented this hand made cutlery, especially designed for cold served supper which is traditionally eaten in the cultural area of Austria and Germany.

The shape of the knife and fork refer to these meals consisting of bread, cold cuts, pickles and raw vegetables.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

‘Regrets, I’ve had a few,’ sang Sinatra in his classic ballad ‘My Way’, while Piaf famously insisted that she regretted absolutely nothing. Somewhere between these two lies Ronan Bouroullec, one half of the distinguished French go-to design duo, the Bouroullec Brothers. ‘We’ve done a lot of disasters. But we’ve had the chance to do best-sellers, too. It’s a mix, really,’ he tells Architonic at the recent Cologne Furniture Fair.
