Amidst one of the biggest urban developments of private-collective dwellings in the Netherlands, on a former industrial site close to the historical heart of the renowned Dutch university city of Leiden, the Rotterdam based pasel kuenzel architects realised this single family home.

This ample and well-lit single family home was designed by the Japanese practice Jun Igarashi Architects. Due to its unfavourable location right next to an iron factory there was no need to provide a special view to the surroundings – instead the architect created a broad inward-oriented living area which functions independently from its environment.

Thatched roofs have a very old tradition. In contrast to tropical countries where this method is still employed oftentimes, in countries of temperate climate such as UK, Denmark or Germany this type of roofing is mostly applied by affluent people who desire a rustic look for their home. The young Dutch architect Arjen Reas, recently completed this beautiful modern version of a thatched roof house, though. I just love it.

Since approximately 25% of the Netherlands is below sea level, no wonder that it is famous for its colonies of houseboats. The Amsterdam based +31ARCHITECTS realised this luxurious version which floats in the Amstel river of Amsterdam.

This single family home on a little hill near Oliveira city, Portugal was realised by the Porto based practice Nuno Brandão Costa Arquitecto. The building is composed of two stacked cubic volumes which form the first and second storey and a basement hidden under the slope to open itself over Oliveira city.

This single family home, recently unveiled by the Tokyo based APOLLO Architects & Associates is located in the center of Sendai, a city in the north of Honshu, Japan’s biggest island. Due to the high traffic density the building is surrounded by a wall, which forms some intimate and calm courtyards.

The Kyoto based practice Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio realised this home for a for young couple, in a neighbourhood of old Japanese style houses in a calm village near Nagoya, Japan. While the outside is designed according to traditional architectural environment, the inside is characterised by very smart, spacial organisation.

This single family home, located on a rather challenging plot – a surrounding area burdened by the aesthetic and cultural tradition of the Spanish row-house concept and, on the other hand, the plot’s exposure to solar radiation during the hottest months of the year – was realised by the Madrid based practice dosmasunoarquitectos.
