‘DISCUS Evolution’ LED lighting system by EOOS Design for Zumtobel embraces minimal form for maximum effect, picking up a iF gold award in the lighting category

Three score old and in rude health: the iF design gold awards, handed out to a painstakingly selected, international cohort of companies at the recent Munich Creative Business Week for their outstanding products, is looking to the future. Lean, lithe and limber, iF, one of longest-established design awards schemes internationally, is showing little sign of slowing down. Indeed, with operations – beyond its HQ in Germany’s expo city of Hanover – in Taipei, Seoul, Istanbul, Curitiba and Zittau, this annual gong-laden showcase of the best in product design, packaging and communication design has long exceeded its original, post-war ‘Industrie Forum Design’ remit to become a truly ‘International Forum’ for design excellence. Architonic’s Simon Keane-Cowell presents some of the winners of this year’s iF International Forum Design Award and interviews Ralph Wiegmann, Managing Director, iF International Forum Design GmbH.

German manufacturer Walter Knoll’s latest product is the ‘Cuoio Lounge Chair’designed by EOOS. The fact that the chair can be separated into its constituent parts and is recyclable ensures its sustainability. The footstool and the comfort cushion for your back complement the delicate piece. A sheepskin rug thrown over the chair makes it even softer and is another accessory available from Knoll.

'Discus' by Zumtobel

The Austrian specialist for architectural lighting Zumtobel presented its first spot light system especially designed for LED technology. It was developed in collaboration with EOOS and showcased during this year’s light+building in Frankfurt for the first time. The flat and low-profile body is made of die-cast aluminium, the ring of cooling ribs is not only the spotlight’s dominating design feature but also performs the cooling function required by LED technology. Optimised thermal management is decisive for the durablity of any kind of high-power LED modules.

“The idea behind the design developed by the Austrian designer trio was to minimise the shapes by using the new LED technology. Harald Gründl from EOOS: “Discus is the archaic symbol of the sun – combined with cutting-edge LED lighting technology.”

Thus, the LED version has a width of only 28 mm. The newly developed track-box adapter platform features a compact, unobtrusive design, emphasising the minimalist spotlight concept. For its appealing design, Zumtobel won the 2010 iF award for excellent product design granted by the Design Council.”
