‘Between centers’ series features characteristic marks synonymous with the process of woodturning

Inspired by the traditional woodturning technique, a young, Madrid-based designer Jorge de la Cruz has realised this three-piece collection called ‘Between centres’. Consisting of a stool, banquette and a dining/working table models, the understated, minimalist series features characteristic marks synonymous with the process of woodturning and the pieces, which are available in wither maple or dyed birch wood, were first presented earlier last month during Dutch Design Week 2012 in Eindhoven. ‘Contrast’ side tables by BCXSY

Israeli-born Boaz Cohen and Japanese-born Sayaka Yamamoto, the designer duo behind the Eindhoven-based practice BCXSY have realised this series of simple side tables called ‘Contrast.’ Part of a three-piece collection developed by BCXSY in collaboration with an Irish maritime cultural and educational centre Meitheal Mara, the construction of table was inspired by the traditional boat-building process while its clean lines and geometric form seem to hint at the Bauhaus aesthetics. ‘Syzygy: Eclipse’ table lamp by OS ∆ OOS

Taking their cue from ‘the sun and its surrounding celestial bodies’, a duo of young Dutch, Eindhoved-trained designers behind the enigmatically named OS ∆ OOS studio have created a three-piece series of lamps called ‘Syzygy.’ Owing its name to an astronomical name denoting ‘a straight line configuration of three celestial bodies in a gravitational system,’ the collection comprises two table and one wall light models, each of which demonstrates a particular aspect of the syzygy: transit, occultation and eclipse. The lamps are currently on view at a ‘Craft & Scenography’ exhibition in Basel. (more…)

'Breakfast Buffet' by De Intuïtiefabriek for Priveekollektie

Created especially for Chateau de la Resle hotel in Burgundy, France and commissioned by a Dutch art and design gallery Priveekollektie Comtemporary Art | Design, this simple yet functional breakfast table has been designed by an Eindhoven-based design collective De Intuïtiefabriek. Realised earlier this year, the solid oak table incorporates a number of shallow depressions intended to accommodate various serving dishes and beverage bottles. (more…)

'Transcience' mirror by David Derksen and Lex Pott (NL)

With their recent project, David Derksen and Lex Pott - two young designers and Design Academy Eindhoven alumni – explored and reinterpreted the naturally occurring process of oxidation by using sulfur to accelerate and recreate this otherwise spontaneous, slowly-developing ageing process of silvered-glass mirror. By careful calculation and manipulation, the designers ‘stained’ the mirrors thus achieving a beautiful, geometric ombré pattern that is further accentuated by the overall shape of each of the three mirrors. 'Spotlight Volumes' pendant lamp by Lukas Peet

The young Canadian designer and Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Lukas Peet has created this series of steel pendant lamps inspired by spotlights. Presented earlier last month during imm cologne’s [D³] Contest, the ‘Spotlight Volumes’ collection encompasses three glossy lampshades, each fitted with an energy efficient lightbulb at either end which simultaneously illuminate the ceiling and the floor of an interior. The design is suspended with a simple, braided electrical cord and a 1mm steel wire looped around the lamp. (more…)

'Dutch Tap Water' carafes by Lotte de Raadt; photo by Maarten de Raadt

To raise environmental awareness and draw attention to the green credentials as well as far-reaching benefits of relinquishing the bottle and switching back to the tap, the young Dutch designer and recent Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Lotte de Raad has created this series of three simple glass carafes whose lid references the origins of the water they’re intended for. ‘NewspaperWood’ is an ingenious upcycled material developed by the young designer and Eindhoven-graduate Meike Meijer who by gluing together multiple layers of old newspapers has reversed the traditional process of paper-making. (more…)
