Istanbul Design Week, as seen by Architonic
Just as the city of Istanbul sits famously astride the mouth of the Bosphorus, linking – in the imagination at least, if not in reality – East and West, so Istanbul Design Week is a tale of two parts. It’s great, of course, that there’s a vehicle to promote design in Turkey to an international audience, and Istanbul is a hugely vibrant and creative place, offering restaurants, clubs and other venues whose interior design is up there with anything you’d find in New York or London. But Istanbul was always a highly creative city, with an emphasis on an incredible and unique craftsmanship. (more…)
this year's edition of designjunction, as seen by Architonic's editors
A clear highlight of last week’s London Design Festival 2011 was designjunction, the group show that made a confident debut in Milan this April, but which surpassed itself in the British capital. Having started out as a Brits-only exhibition, but now international in terms of its line-up, designjunction took up residence in the white-tiled basement of Bloomsbury’s Victoria House, an ideal space for the strong work on show to dialogue with. Proceedings were helped, naturally, by the presence of a good bar and some fine food. Well done to designjunction’s organisers, Jon Powell and Deborah Spencer. (more…)
The third edition of PLDC will take place in Madrid between 19 - 22 October
Madrid is hotting up. This October sees a predicted 1,300 visitors head to the Spanish capital for the Professional Lighting Design Convention (PLDC) 2011, a major further-education event, where new lighting solutions, information sharing on research results, cutting-edge technologies and business networking are all on the agenda. 'Ta-rae Lighting' by Design Virus
As part of London Design Week 2011, an exhibition of Korean design, which goes by the rather cunning title ‘Korea Design’, will showcase the work of 15 companies and individuals. Covering furniture, lighting, product and textile design, the show functions as a corrective to the prevalent image of Korean design as one associated with electronics and other high-tech goods. Should you be in the Slovenian neck of the woods this autumn, or even if you’re not, why not head to Ljubljana for the literally titled, but anything but prosaic, Month of Design 2011, which kicks off on 13 October? (more…)

Parisian Galerie Kreo at Design Miami/ Basel 2011
For the first time since it was founded in 2005, Design Miami/ Basel was this year under the new direction of Marianne Goebl, who curated the trade fair with an expert eye. In February 2011 she followed in the footsteps of Ambra Medda who, after splitting up with her partner Craig Robbins, also lost her commitment to her position as director of their joint baby, as was indicated at last year’s press conference.
