Beside the well-curated trade fair 100%Design in London the number of satellite events during London’s Design Festival is increasing every year. Especially Shoreditch, one of London’s old worker’s districts with its disused industrial buildings is a hub for exhibitions beyond the usual fair atmosphere. A brand new venue is The Tramshed at the former electricity power station for the Shoreditch tram system.

Some of you might remember the beautiful thin walled cast concrete pendant lamps the British designer Benjamin Hubert presented at the 100%Futures at Earls Court last year. The young label Decode found intrest in the designer’s work and will launch a whole family of the ‘Heavy Lights’ this year.

“Heavy lights encapsulate the material focused approach of Benjamin Hubert studio and are designed not only to push the potential of an industrial material like concrete but also to challenge perceptions of value.

With a relatively lightweight, thin wall section (5mm) and polished exterior it is hoped that the user will value concrete as a luxury commodity in line with green issues and to counteract the current throwaway society. Heavy lamps utilise a material that is taken for granted in the building industry and present a high-end lighting solution elevating its material worth.”
