‘Pelt’ chair by Benjamin Hubert for De La Espada

Award-winning British industrial designer Benjamin Hubert has collaborated with the Portuguese manufacturer De La Espada on this visually light, stackable chair called ‘Pelt’. Twelve months in the making, the design features a thin, birch plywood shell which ‘wraps around a solid ash frame, akin the skin over an animal’s skeleton’ and the chair was launched during this year’s edition of the London Design Festival. British furniture designer Matthew Hilton’s work manages to walk that very fine line between restraint and expressiveness. It’s probably why his designs, offering as they do a kind of reassurance, are so respected by so many. But the path hasn’t always been a smooth one, as Architonic discovered when we met up with Hilton at this year’s London Design Festival.

The Tramshed Guide

Get the guide for the new venue at this year’s London Design Festival: The Tramshed. At the old disused electricity power station in Shoreditch, one of the LDF hubs, 25 exclusive international design brands, including Studioilse, Scin, Autoban, Another Country, Bocci, Michael Sodeau, Dezeen Watch Store, Matthew Hilton and Kvadrat, were invited to showcase their latest collections.

The Tramshed Live is programme of seminars, curated by design critic, writer and conference producer Aidan Walker, designed to challenge, provoke and engage with 21st century design. Leading creative thinkers including Patricia Urquiola, Ilse Crawford, Luke Pearson and Theo Williams will lead discussions on specific topics.

The Tramshed at the former electricity power station for the Shoreditch tram system

Beside the well-curated trade fair 100%Design in London the number of satellite events during London’s Design Festival is increasing every year. Especially Shoreditch, one of London’s old worker’s districts with its disused industrial buildings is a hub for exhibitions beyond the usual fair atmosphere. A brand new venue is The Tramshed at the former electricity power station for the Shoreditch tram system.

During the London Design Festival the British manufacturer De La Espada presents within their ‘PRODUCT’ exhibition in a beautiful showroom in Shoreditch its new collections, all created in collaboration with promosing international designers.

The ‘Tou Chair’ designed by the Japanese practice Leif.designpark is a formally new appliance of tradiational Japanese craft. The seating is made of rattan which is is intricately hand woven through an upholstered frame.
