'Biknit' chaise longue by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso

It is a collaboration that has been going on for many years between the Spanish born and Milan based designer Patricia Urquiola and the Italian manufacturer Moroso. At this year’s Salone del Mobile they presented their most recent output: ‘Biknit’ is a series of upholstery furniture based on a simple, solid wooden base combined with an oversized knitted covering.

'Tokyo' chaise-longue by Charlotte Perriand

During this year’s Salone del Mobile the Italian manufacturer Cassina will present its first outdoor collection including the ‘Tokyo’ chaise-longue by Charlotte Perriand from 1940. It is the first time this extraordinary piece, conceived during Perriands stay in Japan, is in serial production. Cassina offers the design in several types of wood: bamboo, teak and beech. The outdoor collection also includes some of the most important designs by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanerette.

Within the ‘Made in Berlin’ exhibition which was set up by DMY and Create Berlin during this year’s Milan Design Week the Berlin based practice e27 presented these new pieces, made from laser cut steel sheet.

“The idea of ‘loll’ is to transfer the idea of stretching metal from 2d to 3d into furniture solutions. stretching the laser cut steel sheet up to maximal strain creates a static equilibrium. with this simple but ingenious technique, a metal sheet just 3 mm thick has been turned into a lounger and a coffee table”, the designers explain.

It’s probably safe to say that the chaise longue isn’t an object-type that sits at the top of the list when it comes to its actual daily use. But, for some reason, it continues to attract the imagination of product designers. Perhaps it is due to its sculptural nature, echoing the form of the body; or because of its memorable exploration by such Modernists as Charlotte Perriand and Lily Reich.

At any rate, Brazilian architect and designer Paulo Mendes da Rocha has created an extremely elegant, thin sheet-steel chaise longue, whose real beauty becomes apparent when it is viewed in profile: the piece turns into a highly graphic set of lines and a dot.
