‘Drizzle’ shelving system by Luca Nichetto for Gallotti & Radice

Inspired by the long, vertical lines of the falling rain, the award-winning Venetian designer Luca Nichetto has developed ‘Drizzle’, an aptly-named shelving system for the Italian crystal specialists Gallotti & Radice. Unveiled earlier this year during Milan’s Salone del Mobile, the linear, grid-like bookshelf is composed of multiple metal elements that support and frame the shelves which are made of either transparent or frosted glass. Available in multiple colourways, ‘Drizzle’ can be arranged in a virtually infinite number of configurations. (more…)

Charlotte Perriand and ‘Nuage’ at the Expo Synthèse des Arts Tokyo, 1955; photo by Junzo Inamura

Tubular steel chairs, or perhaps aluminium and glass creations might indeed be the first designs that come to mind when thinking of Charlotte Perriand’s pioneering pieces. One of modernism’s most significant furniture designers, and one of the few women who broke the glass ceiling of this then firmly male-dominated profession, Perriand’s most famous designs include the iconic LC4 Chaise Longue or the LC7 Swivel Chair, both of which were developed in collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. On this recently-reissued oak wood-and-aluminium shelving collection however, the French designer worked on her own. Called ‘Nuage‘ the Bauhaus-coloured modular series was inspired by Japanese architecture (Perriand spent there two years working as a ministerial advisor on industrial design) and comprises five models of varying heights, all of which feature characteristic sliding panels which come in either anodised aluminium, or in red, blue, green, yellow, grey, black or white. ‘Aura’ shelving unit by Speziell

Sibylle Fleckenstein, Jens Pohlmann and Thilo Schwer, a trio of product designers behind the German brand Speziell have realised this expressive, seemingly offset shelving unit called ‘Aura’. Developed in uniformly white MDF, ‘Aura‘ appears to be backlit by splashes of neon hues radiating from the otherwise unnoticeable, hidden surfaces which have been covered with boldly-coloured paint. Apart from the shelving unit, the collection also comprises two additional designs: a low side table and a wall-mounted CD board. (more…)

Detail of ‘Poet’s Book Hanger’ by Jakob Jørgensen for Danish Crafts

A clever and relatively less space-demanding alternative to traditional bookshelves and cabinets, this neat book hanger has been devised by a Copenhagen-based furniture designer Jakob Jørgensen. Composed of a plain wooden mounting and a number of ‘sticks’ which can also double as bookmarks, ‘Poet’s Book Hanger’ was developed for Danish Crafts‘ MINDCRAFT12 exhibition which was organised on the occasion of Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2012 fair and showcased 16 new works by 12 contemporary Danish artists and designers. 'Level' bookshelf by Lina Nordqvist for Karl Andersson & Söner

A Stockholm-based designer Lina Nordqvist has recently realised this series of geometric, scaffolding-inspired bookshelves for the Swedish furniture manufacturer Karl Andersson & Söner. Available in two heights and three widths as well as variety of finishes, the asymmetrically gridded ‘Level’ ‘is adapted to the different sizes of paperbacks, hardback books and magazines that can be placed between the rods.’ (more…)

'XI' bookshelf by Gonçalo Campos

Reminiscent of an oversized puzzle, this simple wooden bookshelf has been recently realised by the young Portuguese designer Gonçalo Campos. Featuring a number of discreetly-carved assembly directions, the ‘XI’ bookshelf can be easily put together without the need of screws, glue or any additional parts or joints. Instead, the parts of the design lock together thanks to the very carefully placed fittings. (more…)

'Bluff City Light' pendant light, by Atelier Takagi

Jonah Takagi, Washington based designer and founder of Atelier Takagi, recently launched these beautiful new creations: ‘Bluff City Light’ is a pendant light which particularly accentuates an element one usually tries to disguise – the ventilation grid. The enameled steel cage is combined with an elegant copper socket and an enameled minimal aluminum diffusor.
