'Franzl' by Sebastian Schneider

The young German design student and trained cabinet maker Sebastian Schneider recently presented this hinged table and bench – an elegant and smartly translated alternative to the typical German “beer bench”. The tripod base is composed of three loosly connected legs a joining rod and a collet made from aluminium and gets stabilised with the weight of the user. And the best thing is – all those who have had a few to many beers in a typical beer tent once know what I am talking about – due to the tripod you may sit on the one side and the bench will not overturn.

'Unit E&S' by Robert Wettstein

With his newest conceptual work the Swiss designer Robert Wettstein seems to comment the influence of corporate identity and branding of todays furniture industry. During this year’s Milan Design Week he will present this high table / bench made from the packaging of a renowned British furniture manufacturer. The exhibition will be set up at La Fabbrica del Vapore via G. C. Procaccini 4

'Unit E&S' by Robert Wettstein

Here is what Robert Wettstein explains:

“The piece is made from a transportation box which once contained a valuable piece of design. After carrying the product well-protected to the client the box fulfilled its requirements and is not needed anymore. Usually! I give it a new function. Refined by a transparent coating applied by a specialist the box turns into a useful piece of furniture. The irony lies in the playful handling of branding and editions since every box is signed by me.”

'Close to be open' by Agnes Ögren and Valerie Otte

The Berlin and Zurich based designers Valerie Otte and Agnes Ögren cultivate something you could call a long distance studio. Collaborating via Skype and e-mail the two managed to develop their ideas and realise a hormonic series of furniture, which they presented at this year’s Greenhouse during the Stockholm Furniture Fair for the first time.

'Close to be open' by Agnes Ögren and Valerie Otte

“The project explores both the mechanical-physical and the metaphysical aspects of opening and closing and of open and closed states. Both designers are fascinated by products which refer in some way to this and other grey zones of transition.”

The ‘AA furniture’ designed by the US based designer Hsin-Chun Wang is a composition of a simplistic, narrow bar height table and a bar stool height long bench. Combined in variable positions it is an ideal piece of furniture for waiting areas and public architecture.

The Italian deigner Luca Nichetto realised this series of furniture made from bent corian sheets. It was designed for the Italian manufacturer Andreoli.

“Inspiration for this product was born by the idea to realize a product which just like a stripe develop itself and random draws a neverending element, without limits.Elements, not presenting a precise direction for disposition, put side by side creates a sort of wall where the play between full and empty melts with its wiggly flow generating a contrast with materic typical features of Corian.”

With his graduation project ‘Fragments Of Nature’ the Dutch designer Lex Pott combines the geometric forms of industrially processed wood with the original, organic structure of a tree in a series of items of furniture.

“Where the legs of his table meet its top, the form of a tree trunk can easily be seen. The contours of his cupboard are also directly derived from the tree trunk. The pieces of furniture are reproducible, yet remain a unique fragment of the natural world.”
