The latest as well as the last of the 12 designs from Nikari’s year-long project DESIGNS FOR NATURE, which brought together some of world’s most renowned designers or design studios, who, each month, created a wooden product, this pared-down, minimalist chair was developed in a collaborative process between the famed English product and furniture designer Jasper Morrison and Tokyo-based Wataru Kumano. Made of ash and natural wood oil mixture, here’s what the creators of ‘DECEMBER’ say about its design: ‘”We talked about the pleasure in making things and the idea of a chair that could be bought in a box and built at home. Considering Nikari’s skill in wood work, we worked up the idea of a chair which could be made by following easy instructions…’ (more…)

Close-up of Faye Toogood’s ‘Spade Chair / BATCH’

Described by its designer as “a modern tool for sitting,” this extremely-reduced, three-legged chair was created by London-based Faye Toogood. Owing its minimalist form to Toogood’s clever juxtaposition of two mundane objects: a milking stool and a spade, the solid-ash chair is now available as part of ‘BATCH’ collection which also includes a stool, coffee table, side table and a dining table designs. A young German cabinetmaker and product designer Andreas Mikutta has recently realised this subtle and beautifully simple daybed made out of soap-treated ash wood. Almost ascetic in its appearance, the austerity of ‘Pause’ is softened by a stack of richly coloured pure wool and leather cushions which contrast with and liven the charcoal grey of the mattress and the subdued hue of the wooden frame. Aimed to ‘advocate calmness and tranquility in life’, the daybed was presented at the [D³] Contest during this year’s edition of imm cologne. (more…)

'Within' seat / side table by Studio Vision; photo by Helena Winberg & Anna Kjernsvik

At first glance clinically plain and unassuming, when opened, this two-piece minimalist, geometric seat-cum- side table reveals an angular, sculpture-like structure which contrasts with the design’s otherwise unadorned exterior. Created by a young Swedish designer and founder of Studio Vision, Mattias Stenberg, the aptly-named ‘Within’ was presented earlier last week in Stockholm Furniture Fair’s hall for independent designers and design schools, Greenhouse. Benjamin Hubert's new 'Paddle' task light for Italian manufacturer Fabbian

There’s no excuse to be up that proverbial creek without one. Strongly referencing not only the form of a canoe blade but also its 360-degree movement through water, young British designer Benjamin Hubert’s new ‘Paddle’ LED task lamp for Italian manufacturer Fabbian will be launched at Euroluce during next month’s Milan Salone del Mobile 2011.
