One of the hottest design spots in cool Helsinki has got to be Alvar Aalto-designed Restaurant Savoy, which Architonic had the pleasure of reacquainting itself with last week during Helsinki Design Week.

 

Opening in 1937, the venue is a true Scandinavian-modernist ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, with Aalto and his wife Aino responsible for the space’s ceiling and wall birch veneers, furniture and lighting. But by far its most famous detail is the ‘Savoy Vase’ (nowadays known internationally as the ‘Aalto Vase’), whose undulating glass form has become a highly recognisable, small-scale metaphor for Aalto’s work as a whole. Originally designed in 1936 for a competition organised by glass manufacturer Karhula-Iittala, the rights to the piece were acquired by the newly opened restaurant. (more…)
