Ahead of next week’s official opening, we have just received the images of this striking, newly completed Liverpool Museum designed by the Copenhagen-based practice 3XN. The museum, which will open its doors to the public on 19.07 is the largest museum built in the UK for over a century and the bold geometric structure is situated by the Mersey River, on a UNESCO World Heritage Site next to Liverpool’s famous waterfront buildings: the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the former offices of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, also known as ‘Three Graces’. 'Gotham Street Lighting System', photo by Adam Mork

The South Tyrolean lighting manufacturer ewo recently presented their innovative modular ‘ewoLED technology’ within various outdoor lamps at this year’s light+building in Frankfurt. One of them is the ‘Gotham Street Lighting System’ which was developed in colaboration with lighting designer Steven Scott (Scotia Lighting), he created the photovoltaic panels for the mast system and the Danish architectural practice 3xn, who was responsible for the design of the lamp’s head. The project for the
Bella Center in Copenhagen was commissioned by the Danish Government with the mandate from the United Nations, it was presented within last year’s UN Conference on Climate Change for the first time.

“The goal of the ‘Gotham Street Lighting System’ project was to develop and realise a sustainable outdoor lighting system. The luminaires were designed in such a way as to offer a CO2 neutral lighting solution. The photovoltaic panels generate more energy than the system requires. The focal point of the UN Conference on Climate Change is to develop a comprehensive set of guidelines to combat global warming.”

“ewo is able to present a highly efficient and versatile solution for street lighting in the form of the LED modular system. ewo incorporates the following two principles throughout its LED lighting manufacturing process: highest quality and optimal modular configuration. The company is aiming its new product at other outdoor lighting producers and in doing so offers them a new system whose specifications set new standards – the product which offers consistent performance and efficiency fulfils norm EN13201up to the highest classification of M1.”

The Danish architectural practice 3xn recently unveiled the new building for the Middelfart Savings Bank on te Danish island of Fyn. Internationally renowned artist Olafur Eliasson has created an art installation for the plaza. Six ‘shooting star’ kaleidoscopes inspired by the triangular geometry of the building are lowered into the ground floor granite adding an extra dimension to the structure.
Middelfart Savings Bank’s new head office was awarded the MIPIM Future Projects Award in 2006. It was inaugurated April 16 2010.

Here is what the architects explain:

“The 83 prism like skylights compose the spectacular roof surface defining the geometry of the rest of the building – in reference to the maritime environment on the harbor front as well as the surrounding timber framed buildings. The roof is designed to frame a perfect view towards the Lillebælt waters as well with a functional purpose of shading from direct sunlight.
Under the roof different functions such as a bookshop, a café, a real estate agent and the cash desk are placed around a central plaza, resulting in the building forming an informal public meeting space.”

Large Energy Savings
“With these thermoactive concrete elements it is possible to reduce the energy consumption for heating by 30 percent and the energy consumption for cooling and mechanical ventilation by up to 85 percent; in total, an energy saving of 30-50 percent. This is due to the fact that the system allows for better use of alternative supply sources, i.e. the plant can operate as a lowtemperature floor heating system during winter, based upon heat-driven heat pumps, and during summer, the cool night air, soil tubes, ground water or sea water can be used for cooling. The system is partly self-regulating as water for heating and/or cooling is circulated with a temperature only a few degrees from the desired room temperature, and this is the key to the large energy savings. In addition to energy savings the capital costs were lower due to the reduced needs for cooling and heating.”

Saxo Bank headquarter in Copenhagen/Denmark by 3XN

The facades are carried out as double curved glass walls.

The facades are carried out as double curved glass walls.

The new headquarters of the young internet bank Saxo Bank in Copenhagen by the architects of 3XN is once more an example of iconographic and less moderate façade design. The triangular façade’s panels, which create a dynamic pattern, are made of both glass and white aluminium.

Nevertheless the 22,700 sqm building doesn´t lose its human scale. A central staircase spiralling up to the glass roof is supposed to be an important “social element where you meet each other [...] and when it is so inviting, people use it more”, says Kim Herforth Nielsen.
