Acclaimed Japanese product designer and master of form Naoto Fukasawa has applied his signature approach, one characterised by reduction and balance, to cookware, creating a restrained collection of pots and pans for Italian manufacturer Alessi called ‘Shiba’.

Named after the Japanese breed of dog (we’ll let you work that one out), the project’s central idea is to mirror the products’ formal minimalism with a rigorous reduction in terms of their number; Fukasawa chose to design only those utensils he felt were absolutely necessary.

The designer also has a laudable attitude to how we should live with such objects, seeing them as long-term companions. ‘With this range of products,’ he explains, ‘I wanted to create tools that people can continue to use throughout the years, rooting in their culture, repairing rather than replacing them, somehow even enjoying the signs of use they acquire over time, as habits and tastes evolve.’
