Prouvé RAW, a collaborative project between the Swiss furniture-manufacturing heavyweight Vitra and the international denim brand G-star exploring classic and lesser-known designs by the renowned French furniture designer Jean Prouvé is currently on show at the Zaha Hadid-designed
Hadid Firestation at Vitra’s Weil am Rhein campus.
The Inception-esque, multidimensional exhibition showcasing a collection of 17 reinterpreted designs – nine of which will be available from autumn 2011 – opened on 16 June and will remain open until 31 July 2011.
From Vitra:
‘Prouvé RAW is a collection of newly interpreted furniture classics from French designer and artisan Jean Prouvé. It complements G-Star’s crossover projects products “RAW Defender”, “RAW Ferry” and “RAW Cannondale”. These experiments in design unite G‐Star’s DNA with that of other companies that value innovation, technology and craftsmanship. The designs of Jean Prouvé have been a source of inspiration for the creative team at G-Star for quite some time. This appreciation of and fascination with the artist was the starting point for Prouvé RAW in collaboration with Vitra. Thanks to the cooperation of G-Star, the Prouvé family and Vitra, Prouvé’s most famous designs have been re-issued with a contemporary flair, while some of his lesser-known designs have been rediscovered.’
‘Jean Prouvé’s designs stand for language of necessity and construction, while simultaneously giving the technical object a poetic aura. Born in 1901 in Paris, he trained as a metal-smith and engineer before turning his attention to crafting furniture and starting his own industrial manufacturing. This background can be retrieved in gis design approach; he never designed for the sake of form alone, instead following functionality and the essence of materials, construction and production.’
