The exhibition of Japanese design departmentstore Muji ‘Product fitness 80′ in the London Design Museum is inspired by Japanese moderation, which Mujis thinks of as the basic principle of the minimalism that characterises their products.
The exhibition is examining what would happen if 20% less materials and energy were used to make everyday products.
This minimalism does not just concern the design, but also the production process: Muji keeps on asking themselves if they used excessive material, whether products are overpackaged or if they are sized too large or weigh too much and if waste could be reduced by the way of ordering, manufacturing or transporting the products.
Product fitness 80 therefore aims to reflect Muji’s willingness to educate themselves by reviewing their own adequacy and fitness.
