Following hemp, kenaf and polycaprolactone wax soap has become yet another unusual material employed in the furniture design showcased at this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Created by the Austrian design practice Pudelskern, ‘Tabula Rasa’ is a table made of translucent natural soap and it was presented at the ‘Design Vision Austria’ exhibition in Zona Tortona.

Inspired by the said blank slate faced by writers and artists the plain surface of the table encourages a creative interaction. Just ‘like sketchbooks, notebooks or a restaurant’s napkin ‘Tabula Rasa’ can be the medium to preserve ideas for the moment’ while ’the cavities of hand-drawn lines refract the light shining through the amber coloured table leaf and the viewpoint changes the look of the table.’
