At the upcoming Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italian design brand Porro will be showing a stand designed by Piero Lissoni, an open-plan ‘villa’ with flowing spaces with a unifying theme, the play of solids and voids. One of the new products to be shown in that stand illustrates the theme well, the ‘Mikado’ cupboard by Sweden’s Front Design.
With a shape and materials that re-emerge from the past, offering new functionality, Mikado is an intriguing product offering a captivating lightness and an exotic look. A storage unit for living areas, Mikado features a slender wood structure and doors made up of a double row of slanted and staggered wooden slats that brings to mind the Orient, unique hand-made furniture made of delicate wood sticks or bamboo, and wonderful cages created to hold fantastical creatures. Says Porro, “The irregularities of nature are tamed by Front and transformed by Porro into a mass-produced piece designed for the contemporary world. Offering a touch of playfulness, its unexpected presence is rooted in our deepest imaginations.”
