While the news about Iceland’s economy may sound more like a broken record than a harp and the last year’s Eyjafjallajokull eruption covered the country with a blanked of dreary ash cloud, the scintillating angular-glass façade of the new cultural centre Harpa dazzles like a jewel in Reykjavik’s eastern harbour.

Designed by the award-winning Copenhagen-based practice Henning Larsen Architects, the striking Harpa Concert and Conference Centre has been under construction since 2007 and on 20 August the development will celebrate its inauguration, at which point the building’s glass façade designed by artist Olafur Elíasson and reminiscent of the crystallised basalt columns commonly found in Iceland, is set be completed.

The 29,000-square-meters centre is now a home to both Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Icelandic Opera, and the venue, which hosted the fist series of concerts at the beginning of May, boasts four state-of-the-art concert and music halls, an auditorium and a number of conference centres.
