There’s nothing like celebrating the anniversary of a design classic to make you feel old.
It’s 40 years since future-gazing Italian design legend Joe Colombo’s ‘Birillo Stool’ for Zanotta was first launched. Having made an appearance along the way in Ridley Scott’s 1982 dystopyian film masterpiece ‘Blade Runner’, the piece, with its pop-aesthetic-meets-the-language-of-the-Bauhaus reinforced-plastic and fibreglass base, tubular-steel frame and leather rotating seat, is still as engaging as ever.
Of course, the stool’s micro seat-back is the overall design’s most idiosyncratic and memorable element.
Joe, we miss you.
