Apple Orchard Road is the first Apple Flagship in Singapore, highlighting its role as a global centre for creativity. Its design reflects the vibrancy and innovative spirit of the city-state. The project is another example of the close collaboration between Foster + Partners and the design team at Apple led by chief design officer, Sir Jonathan Ive and Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of Retail and Online Stores. Located along the tree-lined avenue, Orchard Road – at the heart of the garden city – the flagship aims to create a new social focus, while working with nature. It blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. (more…)

Lane 189, located in the Putuo district in central Shanghai – opposite Chang Shou Park and close to the Jade Buddha Temple – is designed to provide a lifestyle destination for Shanghai’s young professionals. Lane189 combines retail, restaurant and office spaces in an organisation that rearranges the typical mall into a vertical city centre and provides opportunities for shopping, strolling, eating, gathering and relaxing. The design incorporates elements of ‘old Shanghai’ through geometry, pattern and materialisation and combines these with a contemporary urban experience, thereby creating a destination with a distinctly Shanghai feel (more…)

Defoe Road by Paper House Project

A once-forgotten derelict warehouse has been transformed into a unique, doubleheight two-bedroom house by the owner/architect who wanted to bring life back to this forgotten structure. Tucked away behind one of Hackney, London’s busiest high streets, the former school-house was discovered by architect James Davies of Paper House Project, who decided to restore and convert the building as a personal project. Although a big financial risk for the young architect, Davies saw the potential in the derelict property and wanted to create a light-filled space he could enjoy that represented everything about why he went into architecture. Art director and founder of Nuun Jewels, Nourah Al Faisal wanted to create a crosscultural space dedicated to her jewellery designs, where Middle Eastern influences would meet French style. The showroom concept would have to embrace the brand’s identity as well as the architectural and design codes developed on the first project by Brunoir: a Nuun window display at the Four Seasons George V. Hence Nourah Al Faisal briefed and commissioned Brunoir to design its first showroom in Paris. (more…)

Hemmed in between a steeply sloping hillside and a wood of eucalyptus trees, the narrow plot of land compels one to cross the garden to arrive, descending, at the small bay of a lagoon. Overlooking the landscape, a monolithic prism of concrete attempts to articulate the contradictions of the topography with a square top floor measuring 20m on each side balanced on top of a compact bottom floor measuring 8.5m on each side.
