Sugamo Shinkin Bank / Tokiwadai branch by Emmanuelle Moureaux Architecture + Design

The French-born, Japan-based architect Emmanuelle Moureaux has realised this joyful three-storey Tokiwadai branch of a Japanese Sugamo Shinkin Bank. Featuring a distinctive white façade punctured by numerous, variously-sized windows and incorporating a reoccurring theme of leaf motifs, the building aims to provide the visiting clients with ‘a natural, rejuvenating feeling.’ (more…)

‘Visu’ chair by Mika Tolvanen for Muuto

Having recently won the prestigious Bruno Mathsson Award, Finnish designer Mika Tolvanen has realised this series of classic plywood chairs for the Scandinavian furniture brand Muuto. Speaking of his design, Tolvanen explained: “The task was to create a personal interpretation of the ever-relevant plywood/shell chair. I wanted my chair to have an unobtrusive and timeless nature that is familiar but never boring and without sacrificing function or ergonomics. In the end, I think every detail is exactly as it is supposed to be.” Available in a wide variety colours, ‘Visu’ series encompasses two different models: with wooden legs or a steel wire base. The hand-chiselled surface of the ‘Havet’ cabinet by Snickeriet

‘Havet’ – Swedish for ‘sea or waves’ is an intricately-detailed, hand-chiselled cabinet created by designers Karl-Johan Hjerling and Karin Wallenbeck for a Stockholm-based brand specialising in carpentry, Snickeriet. Developed in pine wood, each of the richly-textured cabinets is unique due to the traditional carving technique employed in its production process. (more…)
